Freestylers quick to impress in showcase
HALTON Swimming Club's free-stylers produced another fast-lane performance at the Merseyside & District Individual Championships at Leasowe.
Andrew Matthews took the showcase event, the men's open age 100m freestyle in a rapid 56 seconds.
'Andrew's hard work in the training pool is paying off for him,' said head coach Brian Higgins.
Louise Wallbank did likewise in the ladies' event with Laura Page taking silver for a Halton one-two.
Despite giving away 12 months in the age groups, Ellie Newby won the under 13 50m freestyle and Jess Wainwright captured the 15-years title.
Both girls conjured up great turns to open a gap on their rivals.
Jade McDonnell joined the gold medal winners with a fantastic display in the 13-years breaststroke - claiming her first gold at this level.
Louise Wallbank completed Halton's gold-medal haul, winning the 100m back-stroke comfortably.
Sadie Smith (U11) Ellie Newby and Jess Wainwright all managed silver-medal places in the 100m individual medley.
Sadie and Jess added second places in the 50m freestyle and backstroke respectively.
These girls looked impressive throughout.
Laura Page took her second silver of the day in the open-age butterfly.
Rebecca Reese, 15, also proved that hard work pays off, winning her first silver medal at this level in the 50m breast stroke.
Another strong event for Halton's girls proved to be the butterfly.
Ellie Newby, Rebecca Reese and Louise Wallbank all took bronze medals.
Other third places went to Ellie Newby (backstroke), Laura Page (backstroke) and Steven Bailey (freestyle).
At this competition, the fastest six places all gain points for the team.
Louisa Ulph, Adam Owens, Jack Steele, Lucy Wallbank, Chris Newby, James Flaherty all scored well for the overall points.
Louisa and Olivia Bailey in the U11 age group impressed with great personal-best performances throughout the competition.
The final results will be announced at the league's AGM.
