Updates from the Disability Sports Events Open Short Course Championships and the Garston McMonagle Gala.

Disability Sports Events Open Short Course Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge

Halton’s GB Swimmer, Luke Nisted, completed a terrific 6 medal haul at Sheffield Ponds Forge International Pool over the weekend of the 24th & 25th November 2012.

Competing in the Disability Sports Events Open Short Course Swimming Championships, Luke medalled in all of his events, picking up four Silver and two Bronze Medals in an excellent performance across the two day programme despite a bout of illness.

There were well earned Silver Medals for Luke in the 100m Backstroke, 100m Individual Medley, 200m Individual Medley and 100m Breaststroke, plus a couple of Bronze medals in the 50m and 100m Freestyle. It was an outstanding performance from Luke, not only for his medal winning performances but in posting times very close to his existing personal best times for those events despite being under the weather.

Well done, Luke, Great Stuff.

Garston SC McMonagle Invitation Gala 2012

Halton sent a strong team to the Garston SC McMonagle Invitational Relay Gala held at Everton Park, Liverpool over the weekend.

It turned out to be an exciting and highly competitive afternoon’s swimming which is unique in so far as all the events are team relay events and there are also two separate galas running alongside each other within the Programme of events. The Girls and Boys are competing for separate McMonagle Trophies.

The Halton Boys team produced an outstanding performance to take the Boys trophy in fine style.

Providing the foundation for the victory was the Boys Open team of Will Warburton, James Flaherty, Paddy Clegg and Tom Patton who won all four of their events, they were ably supported by the 9 & 10 Years team of Ryan Sanders, Dan Buckley, Sam Craig and Reece Sumner who picked up three victories and a second place finish.

In an excellent all round performance, all of the age groups contributed with none of the Boys Teams finishing lower than third in any event - a set of results that provided a sound basis for the team to go on and win the trophy from the hosts, Garston SC who were a close second.

Halton Boys squad: Will Warburton, James Flaherty, Paddy Clegg and Tom Patton, Ryan Sanders, Dan Buckley, Sam Craig and Reece Sumner, Joshua Howard-Hughes, Ben Woodward, Taylor Tout, Will Woodward, Ben Lovell, Joe Mannion, Richard Houghton, Thomas Roberts, Tom Craig,  Lewis Perry and Joseph Ware.

A very young and inexperienced Halton Girls team, who were affected by non availability and last minute withdrawals, produced a battling performance to finish 5th overall in their competition. Finishing strongly in the second half of the gala, the team moved to within two points of 4th placed Bootle & North Liverpool before running out of events.

Halton Girls Squad: Emmie Brownlow, Katie Wiegand, Daisy Marsh, Abbie Keenan, Leah Horabin, Ami Mannion, Cliodhna Jennions, Jessica Burton, Lizzie Bryce, Ellie -Jo Hughes, Lauren Galligan, Sophie Patton, Ceris Breckell, Courtney Price, Eleanor Donald, Sarah Roberts, Beth Reid, Issy Wnckles, Alison Steele, Nikita Jackson, Chloe Doolan, Morgan Grady.

Boys Result: 1st Halton SC 84 points, 2nd Garston SC 82 points, 3rd Liverpool Penguin SC 74 points, 4th Crosby SC 70 points, 5th Bridgefield SC 34 points, 6th Bootle & North Liverpool SC 33 points.

Girls Result: 1st Liverpool Penguin SC 88 points, 2nd Garston SC 83 points, 3rd Crosby SC 76 points, 4th Bootle & North Liverpool SC 49 points, 5th Halton SC 47 points, 6th Bridgefield SC 33 points.
