City of Liverpool Swimming Club Echo Cup Round 1 Gala 2

In an early start to the 2012/2013 Swimming season, Halton SC’s youngsters were straight into competitive action in the City of Liverpool Swimming Club’s Echo Cup Round 1.

This competition, which is open to swimming clubs throughout Merseyside, Wirral, Cheshire and West Lancashire, is a traditionally tough introduction to the rigours of competitive swimming for 9 to 12 year old swimmers and this year a dozen clubs are fighting it out over two preliminary rounds for places in the Final at Liverpool’s Everton Park Sports Centre on 28th October.

On Saturday evening, in a thrilling first Round gala, Halton SC kept alive their hopes of competing in a first Liverpool Echo Sponsored final in over five years with a fighting performance to finish in third place in Heat 2 against top quality opposition from around the region.

Leading the way in what was an excellent all round team effort with an outstanding double was 9 Year Old Sam Craig who won the Boys 25m Breaststroke and 25m Fly events both in new personal best times.

Team mate Reece Sumner, also 9, won the 25m Freestyle event and finished 2nd in the 25m Backstroke, again both in personal best times, narrowly missing out on a second double for the boys in a tight finish in the backstroke event. Moving up an age group and 10 Year Old Dan Buckley won the 50m Breaststroke event in fine style, once again with a new personal best time.  11 Year Old Will Woodward won the 50m Fly and secured two excellent second places for the team in the 11 Year Old 50m Backstroke and 12 Year Old 50m Breaststroke events.

There were relay wins for the Boys11 Years Freestyle team of Will Woodward, Ryan Sanders, Ben Lovell and Richard Houghton and the girls 11 Years Medley Team of  Lauren Galligan, Zara Cowan, Zahra Groves and Ellie Jo Hughes.

There were excellent second place finishes for Cliodhna Jennions (25m 9 Years Girls Freestyle - Personal Best), Ellie -Jo Hughes (50m 11 Years Girls Back - Personal Best), Eleanor Donald (50m 12 Years Girls Fly - Personal Best), Sophie Patton (50m 11 Years Girls Freestyle - Personal Best) and Issy Winckles (50m 12 Years Girls Backstroke).

Matty Sayle secured a brilliant double second place in the 50m 12 Years Boys Fly and 50m Backstroke events.

In a strong team performance, there were personal best times from Leah Horabin, Ben Lovell, Amy Steele, Luke Sutton, Ryan Sanders, Beth Reid and Sam Clayton. There were also important team points contributions from Lucy Harris, Hannah Chadwick, Taylor Tout, Dean Stapleton, Alice Hilton, Ami Mannion, Richard Houghton, Zahra Groves, Richard Houghton. Ben Lovell and Lizzie Bryce.

A similar fighting performance in three weeks time will give the Team a chance of reaching the final.

Well done to everyone who took part swimming, supporting and helping. Much appreciated.
